Senior pitcher Amanda Crabtree posted her second no-hitter of the season as the 23rd-ranked Houston softball team shut out Louisiana-Monroe, 8-0, Saturday afternoon at the QTI Powers Invitational in Waco, Texas.
Crabtree (7-0) dominated on the day pitching a complete game of five innings and striking out 10 of 18 batters faced. She allowed just three base runners for the game, helping the nationally ranked Cougars improve to 11-3 on the season. Her first no-hitter this year came against Nicholls State on Feb. 18.
"We are really pleased with Amanda," said UH head softball coach Kyla Holas. "She keeps working the plan we set for her and we have been able to see the mental work she's been doing pay off. She showed up for us these last two days."
On the offensive side, the squad hammered out 12 hits, including a perfect day at the plate for right fielder Katy Beth Sherman in the nine-hole. She went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Shortstop Brooke Lathan laced her sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the first inning to set the tone for the game.
After posting a 2-0 start, the Cougars added a run in both the third and fourth innings. Melissa Gregson scored in the third on a Haley Outon single and then drove in Ashleigh Jones on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
In the fifth inning, Lathan singled to lead off, followed by Outon's bunt single and pinch hitter Angela Spittler reaching base on throwing error. Jennifer Klinkert's sacrifice fly drove in Lathan and Katy Beth Sherman's hit brought in Outon. Holly Anderson then singled to score Spittler and Outon returned to the lineup to pinch hit, which payed off with a double to to bring in Sherman, the final run of the game.
"We moved some people around in the lineup, to take some pressure off key spots," Holas added. "We moved the slappers down where we need more power which shook up the lineup. Overall, I really like approach of the team today. They decided to come out and work with what we had and adjust in critical times.
"Tomorrow is the biggest day in the tournament for us and we have to make sure we show up. We have to face this Monroe team again and it is always hard to beat a team twice. We also face a currently undefeated Baylor team who is receiving votes."
The Cougars return to action on Sunday with a pair of games against Louisiana-Monroe at 1 p.m. and host team Baylor at 3 p.m. in the tournament finale.
