HOUSTON - In a seven-part series, UHCougars.com will catch up with each of the seven newcomers of the University of Houston women's basketball squad prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.
UHCougars.com met with freshman forward Amanda Lawson on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming season. Lawson starred at Bryan High School in nearby Bryan, Texas, earning 5A All-State honors after averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds as a senior.
Houston kicks off the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition contest against St. Thomas on Nov. 7 and opens the regular season on Nov. 11 against New Mexico State at Hofheinz Pavilion.
UHCougars.com: What has been the biggest difference in preseason workouts at the Division I level?
Amanda Lawson: "Just trying to stay focused while I'm tired and working hard throughout the entire practice."
UH: What's it like playing for Coach Buchanan?
AL: "On the court, Coach B is pretty serious. He's very helpful. I'm a freshman, so I mess up sometimes but he talks me through it. Off the court, he's like a dad."
UH: Do you have any individual goals for the season that you've set for yourself?
AL: "I actually just want to play as a freshman. It's hard for freshmen to play, so I just want to work hard and play this year."
UH: How has the team chemistry been coming along with seven newcomers?
AL: "We've all had good chemistry since we met each other. We trust each other off the court but we have to learn to trust each other on the court and hold each other accountable and play together as a team."
UH: What made you choose to attend the University of Houston?
AL: "My first basketball camp I ever attended was at the University of Houston, so I've liked it here ever since I was in the eighth grade. It's a family here and that's what I was looking for."
