Houston, Texas - University of Houston wide receiver Patrick Edwards produced college football's top receiving effort of 2011 when he hauled in seven passes for 318 yards and five scores in a 73-34 win against Rice last Thursday. For his incredible performance the senior from Hearne, Texas, was named college football's National Player of the Week by both the College Football Performance Awards and College Sports Madness on Sunday.
Not only was it the top receiving night in college football this season, but the 318 yards and five scores allowed him to take over the national lead with 11 touchdown receptions. He is second nationally with 1,069 receiving yards, just one yard off the national lead of 1,070, which is currently held by Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles.
Edwards also continues to move up several Houston career lists. He is already UH's career leader in receiving yardage (3,824) and is tied with Elmo Wright (1968-70) with 34 career touchdown receptions.
Edwards and the nationally-ranked Cougars (8-0, 4-0) return to action on Saturday night at UAB. Houston is one of college football's six remaining unbeaten clubs and will look for a program best 9-0 start.
