HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team will take to the road again to face No. 23 LSU, Rice and Tulane at the LSU Natatorium, Jan. 28-29.
Houston (4-4) will match up against its first Conference USA opponents since hosting the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic Invitational, Nov. 18-20, this weekend in Louisiana. No. 23 LSU will welcome only C-USA members to the meet, as Tulane (4-5) and Rice (4-6) will join the Cougars in Baton Rouge.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cougars split their trip to Arkansas last weekend, earning a win against UALR, 113-77, and posting a close loss to No. 19 Arkansas, 153-90.
Houston recorded wins in six of the 13 events against the Razorbacks last Friday, including both diving competitions. Junior Kim Eeson paced the swimmers by notching wins in the 100-yard (50.98) and 200-yard (1:50.47) freestyle. Eeson's 100-yard freestyle performance was the ninth fastest in program history. In the meantime, senior All-American Truelove recorded a pair of NCAA `A' qualifying marks when took first in the 1-meter (293.70) and 3-meter (324.68) competitions.
At UALR, the Cougars jumped out to a quick start and stayed hot as they captured every event but one against the Trojans. Freshman Emma Nelson led the way as she collected her first two collegiate wins in the 500-yard and the 1,000-yard freestyle. Eeson also had a pair of wins as six different Cougars notched individual victories during the dual. The Trojans do not have a diving team, so the swimmers went solo to claim the victory.
No. 23 LSU (10-4)
The Tigers host the weekend meet after suffering a loss to No. 9 Texas A&M, 120-163, in their last time out. This will mark the second time Houston and LSU meets this season, as the Tigers also competed in the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic Invitational this fall.
Jane Trepp led the Tigers against the Aggies with wins in the 100-yard butterfly (53.72) and the 50-yard freestyle (22.46). Trepp set pool records in both events at the Cougars' Campus Recreation and Wellness Center last November.
TULANE (4-5)
Tulane enters the weekend after picking up a win against Northern Colorado (102-59) and a loss to No. 24 San Diego State (65-93) in the team's last time out. The Green Wave was led by a pair of third-place performances from Lauren Pfohl and Emily Neeham. Needham posted a time of 2:07.92 in the 200-yard backstroke, while Needham swam the 200-yard butterfly in 2:07.94. Diver Sadie Elcher finished sixth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events to lead the divers.
RICE (4-6)
The Owls enter the weekend after defeating North Texas, 168-97, in their last meet. Shelby Bottoms led the pack with wins in the 100-yard freestyle (53.03) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.52). She was also a member of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team.
