HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team looks to stay perfect in Conference USA action against UTEP Sunday afternoon. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT at Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
The Cougars moved to 3-0 in C-USA play with a 78-59 victory over Southern Miss on Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion. Courtney Taylor registered her 50th-career double-double in the victory with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Lesslee Mason tied a career high with 20 points to go with eight boards.
Taylor is just seven rebounds shy of 1,000 for her career and 19 short of the all-time Houston record. By reaching the 1,000-rebound milestone, Taylor would become one of only two Cougars all-time to score 1,000 points and pull down 1,000 rebounds, joining Vickey Finch (1979-83).
Brittney Scott is also nearing a career milestone, needing only five 3-pointers to surpass Houston great Chandi Jones as the all-time leader. Scott drained one trey against the Lady Eagles on Thursday to push her career total to 184.
The Cougars currently top C-USA in scoring offense (74.8 ppg), rebounding (44.6 rpg) and defensive rebounds (28.6 rpg), while ranking second in blocked shots (4.6 bpg) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (34.4) and scoring margin (+7.8).
ABOUT UTEP
UTEP snapped Memphis' 10-game winning streak on the road on Thursday to improve to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in Conference USA action. The Miners have won three of their last four contests, including a win over East Carolina and a loss at Marshall.
UTEP is averaging 71.7 points per game, while limiting its opponents to just 64.3 points per contest. The Miners have been red hot from beyond the arc, leading C-USA in 3-point percentage (36.0) and 3-point field goals made per game (6.3).
The Miners feature a balanced attack, as six players have averaged at least 7.0 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
The Cougars and Miners will meet for the 16th time since 1987, as Houston holds a 9-6 advantage in the series. Houston is 3-4 in seven contests against the Miners in El Paso.
Houston snapped a six-game losing streak to UTEP by defeating the Miners three times last season. The Cougars triumphed on the road (74-67) and at home (84-54) before slipping past UTEP (57-55) in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament.
Courtney Taylor has averaged a double-double in seven meetings against the Miners with 18.1 points and 10.6 rebounds, while Brittney Scott has posted 15.6 points against UTEP over the last two seasons.
