SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Houston golf team recorded its best round of the tournament Tuesday morning during the final round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic to finish in a tie for fourth place.
After firing back-to-back 292s on Monday, the Cougars posted a team score of 7-over-par 287 to finish in a tie with Lamar at 875. Following the season-opening event, second-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said he was impressed with his young team's overall performance.
"We did a better job today. We had two really sound rounds from freshmen Jesse Droemer and Curtis Reed," Dismuke said. "We played well. We let a couple of shots get away, but all in all, I was very pleased."
Droemer and Reed each posted even par 70s during the final round to lead the Cougars on the 7,023-yard Warren Course. Droemer, a native of Sealy, Texas, finished with a score of 216 to tie for 14th place. He fired back-to-back birdies on holes Nos. 4 and 5 and capped his final round with seven pars and a birdie on the back nine.
Reed, a native of Castroville, Texas, tied for 17th at 217 after recording three birdies during his final round, including two on the front nine.
Freshmen Wesley McClain posted a 54-hole score of 221 to tie for 27th, while freshman Bryn Flanagan tied for 41st at 224.
Senior Matt Eschenburg tied for 52nd with a score of 226 and senior Clark Mitzner - playing as an individual - tied for 44th at 225.
Iowa won the team championship with a score of 853 to finish six strokes ahead of host Notre Dame. San Francisco finished third at 860. Miami (Ohio) (875), Missouri (877), UT Arlington (881), Eastern Michigan (888) and Georgetown (891) rounded out the top 10 team leaders.
San Francisco teammates Taylor Travis and Ji Hwan Park shared medalist honors at 2-under-par 208 and joined Iowa's Brad Hopfinger as the only players to finish under par.
This was the second straight season that the Cougars competed at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. A year ago, the Cougars finished in a tie for sixth with a score of 885.

The Cougars return to action this weekend when they compete at the Cabo Collegiate, hosted by Arkansas and Santa Clara at Querencia Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
That tournament tees off Saturday and runs through Monday with Droemer, Reed, McClain, Flanagan and Eschenburg expected to compete in the starting lineup.
Dismuke and the Cougars return to Houston Tuesday night and will have a day of practice before hitting the road Friday. For the Cougar coach, this weekend cannot get here soon enough.
"It's going to be nice to play two weeks in a row. You learn where your game is when you play like that," Dismuke said. "It's two totally different environments with the colder weather in Indiana and the hot weather in Mexico. They are totally different climates and grasses, so this will be another good learning experience."
