Volleyball Kicks Off Home Schedule With Houston Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team will play its first match of the 2010 season on its home court when they play host to the Houston Invitational on Sept. 3-4 at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Houston will open tournament play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Florida State. They will then play Oklahoma (noon) and Tennessee (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
Other tournament action includes a 3:30 p.m. match between Tennessee and Oklahoma on Friday. Florida State and Tennessee will begin Saturday's action at 10 a.m. and Oklahoma and Florida State will face off at 5 p.m.

All fans that show a football ticket at the volleyball ticket window will receive a $4 ticket to Saturday's action. In addition, fans should note that with both a volleyball tournament and football game being played on campus parking will be limited. Volleyball fans are asked to park in lot 16B for $10.
Houston is 1-2 entering the weekend after defeating McNeese State and falling to Texas and TCU last weekend at the Burnt Orange Classic in Austin, Texas.
The Cougars opening match of the tournament against the Seminoles will be the 14th meeting between the two schools. Houston holds an 8-5 record in the series, including a 3-2 win during their last meeting in 2005.
Florida State is 3-0 entering the tournament this weekend and is currently ranked No. 13 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. The Seminoles knocked off New Mexico State, Florida International and USF during their opening weekend.
UH takes a 6-2 series record into Saturday's match against Oklahoma, despite losing the last meeting 3-0 in 1997. Houston also leads the overall series against the Volunteers, 5-3.
The Sooners defeated Central Arkansas in mid-week action and stand at 3-1 after defeating Miami and UT-Arlington and losing to Wichita State at the Nike Invitational. Tennessee is also undefeated heading into the start of the Houston Invitational. The Volunteers won three matches against Xavier, Chattanooga and Virginia Tech last weekend at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic.

Houston will be back on the road next weekend for the BYU Molten Classic in Provo, Utah. There the Cougars will play Wichita State, BYU and Loyola Marymount on Sept. 10-11.
