NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - With the threat of snow forcing an early end, the University of Houston golf team finished fourth at the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate with a team score of 603.
The Cougars posted a team score of 298 in the morning round, ending a streak of slow starts in recent tournaments and putting them in second place through the first 18 holes. The team overcame temperatures in the mid-30s with a wind from the northwest at 20 mph.
"Unlike the majority of the year, we got off to a great start and put ourselves in good position after the first round," Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said.
Unfortunately, the Cougars saw their afternoon round team score rise to 305 on the 6,928-yard, par-71 course at the Bandit Golf Club, pushing them into fourth place behind North Texas (585), Rice (592) and Stephen F. Austin (595).
With the threat of snow and cold weather expected to move into the area on Tuesday, tournament officials and participating head coaches agreed to end the event after 36 holes.
Junior Clark Mitzner led the Cougars, firing a 3-over-par 145 to tie for third place. The McKinney, Texas, native birdied three of four holes during one stretch to finish the first round at 73.
After a slow start in the second round, Mitzner added two birdies and posted an eagle on the par-5 seventh round for a 72.
Senior Jackie Lindsey tied for seventh place at 147, enjoying a 72 in the first round. Starting on hole No. 10, the Houston native birdied hole Nos. 1, 3 and 5 to start his back nine.
"I was very pleased with Jackie's and Clark's performance," Dismuke said. "They battled through some tough conditions. Both of those guys played really well."
Other Cougars in action included freshman Jordan Rumora (156, t-32nd), junior Matt Eschenburg (157, t-35th) and redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds (161, t-43rd).
North Texas' Peter Fallon captured medalist honors at even-par 142, while UT Arlington's Zack Fischer finished second with a score of 14.

The Cougars now will take nearly two weeks off from competitive action before taking part at the Border Olympics on March 5-6 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
It will be the team's fourth and final tournament in the state of Texas to open the spring season.
