Golf Finishes Seventh at Rice Intercollegiate

Rice Intercollegiate Final Results 
HOUSTON - A day after battling through tough weather conditions, the University of Houston golf team wrapped up its stay with a seventh-place finish at the 10th Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon.
The Cougars posted a team score of 296, equaling their second-round team tally, to finish at 927, on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course at Westwood Golf Club.
With the weather conditions vastly improved from Monday's first 36 holes, scores for all teams and players were lower during the final 18 holes. Unfortunately, the Cougars, as a whole, were unable to capitalize on the low scores and move higher in the final standings.
"We didn't take advantage of some opportunities. We had an opportunity to play well and didn't," Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We gave away some shots here and there. It just wasn't our best effort."
Rice won the team championship with a score of 886, while Auburn finished a distant second at 905. Pacific (909), Kansas (921), Nebraska (923) and Florida Gulf Coast (924) rounded out the top-six team leaders.
Individually, junior Matt Eschenburg led the Cougars for the third time this season with a score of 229.
Freshman Jordan Rumora made the biggest move of the day after firing a 1-over-par 73 - the Cougars' best round of the tournament. The Houston native and Cy Fair High product was the only player to lower his score with each round, tying for 38th at 234.
"I was very pleased with the way Jordan played today," Dismuke said. He really struggled in the first round, but he is a tough kid and decided to just go out and play to the best of his ability. Although he struggled at times during the day, he had a great finish to his round and turned in a really good score."
Other Cougars in action were junior Clark Mitzner (235, t-43rd), redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds (239, t-52nd) and senior Jackie Lindsey (240, t-54th).
Rice's Christopher Brown shot a 69 in the final round to finish at even-par 216 and capture medalist honors, four strokes ahead of teammate Michael Whitehead. Nebraska's Brandon Crick, Kansas' Nate Barbee and Auburn's Will McCurdy tied for third at 223.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return to action Monday when they compete at the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate, hosted by Texas State at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Lost Pines, Texas.
This will be the second of four straight tournaments in the state of Texas to open the spring season.
After a disappointing final round Tuesday, Dismuke said he was happy the Cougars return to the competitive course in less than a week.
"We are close to playing well and have been working hard at home. We are prepared to play well. We must execute better under the gun and the only way to do that is to get back into a tournament situation `Dismuke said. "I am glad the schedule falls the way it does and we get back into action next week."
