HOUSTON - After surging to the top of the Conference USA standings by winning four of its last five contests, the University of Houston women's basketball team will attempt to remain on a roll in the first game of a four-game road trip on Friday when it takes on Tulsa at 7 p.m. inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Houston (12-10) enters the weekend in a three-way tie atop C-USA, sharing a 6-3 league record with Memphis and Tulane. Tulsa, meanwhile, is 7-13 on the year with a 1-8 league mark and on the hunt for an upset.
Just two weeks ago the two teams squared off in Houston with the Cougars earning a hard-fought 77-69 victory over the Golden Hurricane. Junior forward Courtney Taylor enjoyed a career night during the first meeting with Tulsa, scoring a personal best 31 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. Classmate Brittney Scott chipped in with 15 points, while Golden Hurricane leading scorer Larissa Williams poured in 20.
Houston has been an excellent road team this season, owning a 7-3 record on their opponents' home court, including a perfect 4-0 mark in C-USA road tilts.
Taylor is fresh off taking over the top spot on the career double-doubles list of the Houston women's basketball record book. In 78 career games in a Cougar uniform, Taylor has produced 36 double-doubles to pass former UH standout and WNBA All-Star Sancho Lyttle. For her efforts last week leading the Cougars to wins over Rice and Memphis, Taylor was honored on Monday as C-USA Co-Player of the Week, an honor she shared with Dietra Caldwell of UTEP. The weekly league honor is the second of the season for Taylor and the fourth of her career.
Classmate and fellow Cougar frontcourt starter Lesslee Mason was also in the discussion as the league's top player last week when she averaged 14.5 points and 12 rebounds in two games to go along with six blocks, six steals and four assists.
The Cougars are also hoping to get a boost from the return of sophomore point guard Porsche Landry, who sat out the team's last game against Memphis with an injury. For the season, Landry is averaging 9.4 points and 2.6 assists per game. Landry, along with Scott give the Cougars one of the most explosive backcourts in the conferences. Scott leads the Cougars and ranks third in C-USA with a scoring average of 17.1 points per game.
