RUSTON, La. - The University of Houston women's basketball team overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half to topple Louisiana Tech by a score of 70-66, Tuesday night at Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, La. The Cougars improved to 3-0 for only the second time in the past six seasons.
Houston trailed by 12 points with 9:04 remaining before putting together a 9-0 run over 1:21 to cut the deficit to three points. Porsche Landry sparked the run with back-to-back 3-pointers and Courtney Taylor followed with a 3-point play.
After trading baskets, neither team scored for three minutes until Taylor knocked down two free-throws to push the Cougars within a point. After the Lady Techsters ran the lead back out to three points, Taylor knocked down a field goal and followed with a steal and a layup with 1:02 remaining to give Houston its first lead since the 12:47 mark of the first half.
Trailing by two points, Louisiana Tech received the ball with 17.6 seconds remaining and the Cougar defense came up with the stop, allowing senior Brittney Scott to ice the contest with two free-throws with 1.6 seconds left. The Lady Techsters were held to only two points over the game's final 6:52.
Landry led the Cougars with a season-high 20 points off 7-of-17 shooting from the field and a 3-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. The junior from Houston also handed out three assists and posted two steals.
Taylor registered her third-straight double-double of the season and 43rd of her career with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The senior from Crockett, Texas, became the all-time leader at Houston with 609 defensive rebounds and jumped to eighth in UH history with 1,283 career points.
Senior Lesslee Mason was all over the court Tuesday, posting 13 points, seven rebounds, a career-high five assists and four steals. Mason kept the Cougars close in the first half, scoring nine of the opening 17 points.
Scott also scored in double-figures for the third-straight contest, posting 12 points to go with three boards, three assists and two steals.
The Cougars forced 21 Lady Techster turnovers on 19 steals, while handing out 16 assists to only 11 turnovers.
Houston shot 40 percent (27-of-68) from the field, 39 percent (5-of-13) from 3-point range and 52 percent (11-of-21) from the charity stripe. The Cougars were outrebounded for the first time this season by a 52-38 margin.
Adrienne Johnson led Louisiana Tech (2-2) with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Johnson was held to just six points in the second half.
The Cougars continue their four-game road trip at Oral Roberts, Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

*Todd Buchanan has recorded the second-best start by a first-year head coach since Greg Williams went 8-0 to start the 1985-86 season.
*Houston won its first-ever game at Thomas Assembly Center, improving to 1-3 in Ruston and 3-4 overall against Louisiana Tech.
*Courtney Taylor posted her school-record 43rd-career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor registered her 70th-career double-digit scoring performance.
*Taylor pulled down 11 boards to become the all-time Houston leader with 609 defensive rebounds. Taylor also ranks fifth in Houston history with 273 made free-throws.
*Brittney Scott made her 64th-consecutive start on Tuesday. Scott has started every contest since the beginning of the 2008-09 season.
