A pair of University of Houston Cougars football players earned Conference USA honors this week as junior LB Sammy Brown was named co-Defensive Player of the Week and junior kickoff returner Tyron Carrier picked up the special teams award.
In a 45-20 win at SMU, Brown led the Cougars with eight tackles, including four for losses totaling 10 yards. Of those four TFL's, two were quarterback sacks. Brown also forced a fumble, which was recovered by UH and resulted in a field goal. In the past two games, Brown has recorded nine TFL's and four sacks.
With his 91-yard kickoff return for touchdown at SMU, Carrier recorded his first kickoff return score in 2010 and the sixth of his career. Clemson's C.J. Spiller holds the NCAA career record with seven kickoff returns for touchdowns. Carrier's 91-yard kickoff return at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter was his first kickoff return score since a 79-yard kickoff return to start the second half against Air Force in last year's Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. With 179 all-purpose yards (137 return, 42 receiving), Carrier moved past 5,000 all-purpose yards during his career.
