AKRON, Ohio - Former Cougar Laurie Wagner helped the Rockford Thunder capture its first National Pro Fastpitch Championship title on Sunday, Aug. 23 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
The Thunder (19-21) squared off against the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Pride who were 16-24 on the season. Rockford claimed the title after a 2-0 shutout in the final game.
"I'm excited for her as she continues her playing career," Houston softball head coach Kyla Holas said. "Winning championships are always an amazing experience. I am glad she was able to represent Houston in such a positive manner at the professional level."
Wagner, an outfielder, played in 28 games during her rookie year and finished the season with a .193 average and one homerun on 57 at bats.
The Houston native was the Thunder's first round pick (No. 3 overall) in the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft in February and was brought in to bring depth to the Thunder's outfield.
During her time at UH , Wagner won several awards and led her team to claim the 2007 Conference USA Championship. Wagner saw her best season in 2008 as she was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team and All-Conference USA First Team during the Cougar's run to the 2008 C-USA Championship game.
