Volleyball Drops Flo Hyman Invitational Finale, 3-0, to Indiana

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team dropped the finale game at the Flo Hyman Invitational 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 17-25) to the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Houston falls to 1-3 on the season with the loss.
Ashley Applequist led all Cougars with nine kills, including six in the first set. Tara Roenicke added 23 assists, while Alik Cardoso de Sa added seven digs.
The Cougars got off to a sluggish start in the first set, falling behind the visitors 10-2 in the early going. They would chip away at some of the deficit, pulling within five, 10-5, but the Hoosiers would continue to get the best of the home team. Despite a furious run by the Cougars late in the set, Indiana never allowed UH to get closer than four points from a tie.
UH got a solid performance out of Ashley Applequist in the opening set. The Waukesha, Wisc., native had a team-high five kills on six attempts for a .833 hitting percentage.
Houston came out in the second set intent on evening the match. The Cougars capitalized off Hoosier errors and forced a 7-7 tie opening points of the set. The two teams battled point for point until the score was knotted at 13-13. UH gave up three points to the Hoosiers, off a service error and two kills by the visitors, forcing head coach Bill Walton to call a timeout and settle his team. Out of the break, Indiana took a four-point lead, 19-15, and another Cougar timeout was called. The Cougars battled tough for the remainder of the set but it would be the Hoosiers that would come out on top, 25-21, and take a 2-0 lead into the final set.
Applequist added three more kills in the second set, while Jasmine Terry and Stephanie Nwachukwu combined for six kills.
Opening the third set, Indiana took an 8-2 lead. Walton halted play with his first timeout of the set to regroup his team. The Hoosiers continued to control the set, increasing their lead to eight, 11-3, and Walton called his final timeout. Unfortunately, Houston never get closer than six to the Hoosiers lead and they would fall in the final set, 25-17.
Beginning Sept. 4-5, Houston will embark on a month-long road trip at the Arizona Wildcat Classic. They will not return to their home court until the Conference USA home opener against Tulane on Oct. 2.
