Softball Set to Host Marshall, CBSC Broadcasting Sunday's Game

HOUSTON--The University of Houston softball team is set to host Marshall for the final three-game conference series of the 2009 season at Cougar Softball Stadium, beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, and the finale being nationally televised on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. on CBS College Sports.
Seniors Katie Bush, Elaina Nordstrom, Christa Raley, Jessica Valis, Haley Valis and Laurie Wagner will be recognized in between the doubleheader on Saturday.
The Cougars (23-22, C-USA 10-9) lead the all-time series against Marshall, 8-2. The Thundering Herd (29-17, C-USA 10-8) enters this weekend's games after 1-2 against East Carolina last weekend. They also beat Ohio on Wednesday, 12-0 and 3-1.
Houston enters the weekend after winning the road series against Southern Miss, 2-1. The Cougars lost Tuesday's game against Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-3.
Jessica Valis leads the Cougars at the plate in batting average (.342), runs scored (32), hits (52) and triples (3). Nordstrom has a batting average of .339, with five doubles and six home runs.
Wagner has a team-high eight home runs, which is tied with freshman Melissa Gregson, RBI (41) and total bases (71).
Sophomore Baillie Lott leads in the circle with her 14-10 record, 2.95 ERA. She has struck out 90 this season.
The Thundering Herd is led by J.J. Bitner at the plate with her batting average of .386. She leads the team in hits (51).
Melanie Stoehr has a batting average of .383, with 10 doubles, one triple and five home runs. She leads the team in RBI with 34.
Rebecca Gamby has the second-highest batting average in conference games (.316) with three doubles and four home runs.
In the circle, Marshall is led by Katie Murphree, who has an ERA of 2.36, and a 12-6 record. She has struck out 89 this season.
Autumn Mitchell, who has an 11-5 record, has struck out 115.
The Cougars will host Marshall in their final three-game conference series, which is scheduled to begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Dave Maggard, Director of Athletics, who just announced his retirement, will be throwing out the first pitch prior to game one to head coach Kyla Holas. In between the doubleheader, the six seniors will be honored.
The final game of the series will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday and will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports with play-by-play by Carter Blackburn and color analysis by Ann Schatz.
