HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team will cap its second week of spring practice this weekend with a scrimmage on the UH practice fields.
After working out Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week, the Cougars will square off against one another at 11 a.m., Saturday. While practices remain closed, Saturday's scrimmage is open to the public, which is invited to attend.
The spring season culminates with the annual Red-White Game, scheduled for noon, April 18, on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
This will be the Cougars' second scrimmage of the spring season. A week ago, the Cougar offense produced four touchdowns and nearly 500 yards of total offense in the first scrimmage of the spring. Sophomore wide receiver Tyron Carrier recorded seven catches for 115 yards, while redshirt freshmen wideouts Gino Collins and Ronnie Williams added touchdowns.
Junior quarterback Case Keenum, the 2008 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year and 2008 FBS leader in total offense - threw for 259 yards on 17-of-28 passing, while junior Andre Kohn led all backs with 48 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries.
However, it was the Cougar defense that was the star of the initial scrimmage. The unit produced three interceptions and a fumble recovery, including a pair of pickoffs by junior college transfer Jacky Candy.
Senior linebacker Nicholas Thurston recorded an interception while senior defensive end Tyrell Graham added the fumble recovery on the first drive of the game.
COACHES' CLINIC
In addition to the second week of spring practice, the Cougar coaching staff has been busy with a Coaches Clinic during the second half of the week.

Also expected to speak at the clinic are Pearland Dawson High coach Eric Wells, North Shore High coach David Aymond, Humble Atascocita High coach Dean Colbert, Cleveland High coach Ricky Tullos, Westbury High coach Keeath McGee, Arlington Bowie High coach Kenny Perry, Madison High coach Ray Seals and Fort Bend Hightower High coach Shane Hallmark.
