HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team won its 10th consecutive match Sunday to improve to 12-1 this spring, defeating Memphis 5-2 at John E. Hoff Courts.
"Today was a great college tennis match," said head coach John Severance. "Every spot in the line-up meant something; it was a well-fought match by both teams. Memphis is a much improved team with a lot of energy and talent. I was proud of how our girls kept grinding out there, but it should be no surprise because we've been doing that all year."
The Cougars got off to a good start in the match by taking the double point with Laura Ring & Lucy Forward winning 8-1 at the No. 2 position and Jordan McCombs & Vicky Simpson earning an 8-5 win at No. 3.
In singles play, it was once again the depth of the Cougars that help propel them to victory as the team claimed wins at the No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 singles positions. UH is 33-3 in the No. 4-6 singles spots this season, including an 11-0 record in the No. 6 match.
Simpson and freshman Alix Young each had to overcome dropping a set to earn points for UH. Simpson defeated Memphis' Lindsey Wisman 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at the No. 4 match, while Young rebounded after falling in the first set of the No. 5 match to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Robyn Jones.
In the No. 6 position, Neila Starratt earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Amanda Brown.
Senior Lynley Wasson got UH a point in the No. 2 spot, downing Sarah Irving 6-1, 6-4. Joanna Kacprzyk fell in the top singles match to Ashley Murdock, 7-6, 7-4, while Forward dropped the No. 3 singles match to Marjorie Ondeck, 6-1, 6-4.
"I'm excited that we have finished the first half of our season at 12-1 with a 3-0 record in C-USA matches," Severance added. "However, we are going to continue to work and get better. We will have to be ready for a nationally-ranked team, Yale, to come here on March 15."
