HOUSTON - During its first action in three weeks, the University of Houston tennis team had to deal with a rain delay and change of venue Sunday as the Cougars fell to No. 42 Yale in a match that was moved indoors to the Westheimer Indoor Tennis Center.
"We fought hard today, but just game up a little short," said head coach John Severance. "We took both the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to a third set but couldn't come up with a win. It was good for us to play a really good team like Yale, who is nationally ranked, even though it was a tough day with the weather and having to move the match indoors."
Junior Neila Starratt was the lone UH player to notch a point on the afternoon, defeating Yale's Lilian Nguyen 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 in the No. 6 singles match. With the win at No. 6, Houston improved to a perfect 12-0 at the final singles position this season.
Sophomore Lucy Forward and senior Lynley Wasson were able to force a third set in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches respectively, but could not come up with a win. Forward fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Jessica Rhee at the No. 2 spot, while Wasson came up on the short end of a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 score at the No. 3 position.
The two teams did not play the doubles portion of the competition after the match was relocated from John E. Hoff Tennis Courts on the UH campus to the Westheimer Indoor Tennis Center due to inclement weather in the area.
