HOUSTON - Former Cougar baseball player Michael Bourn was named a 2009 Golden Glove winner, as well as being named the team's Most Valuable Player by the Houston Chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Bourn became the first Houston Astros player since Brad Ausmus took home the Golden Glove award in 2006 and he is just the second Astros outfielder to win the award. Cesar Cedeno was a five-time winner of the Golden Glove at outfield from 1972-1976.
In his second year with the Astros, Bourn was named the MVP after batting .285 and he led the National League with 61 stolen bases. He also had a .354 on-base percentage. Bourn finished the season with 11 outfield assists, which was tied for fifth in the National League.
The Texas native played for the Cougars from 2001-2003. He still holds the freshman and sophomore single season records for stolen bases with 35 and 32, respectively. His 55 runs scored and 50 walks are also still freshman records.
