HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team volunteered with the Houston Special Olympics over the weekend.
The Cougars helped to put on a swim meet for over 187 athletes on Oct. 3 at the Galena Park Natatorium. The volunteer work is part of the team's community service efforts this season. They will also help collect money for cancer research with their Second Annual Sprint for the Cure Meet on Feb. 10, 2010. Houston will face off against Texas at the swim meet for the second consecutive season.
Houston becomes part of more than 40,000 volunteers in Texas that give their time to the Special Olympic events. They serve as coaches, officials, committee members, competition coaches and speech coaches.
UH will open it's swimming and diving season this weekend when they host Rice and Florida International for the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend. Competition begins on Friday and 5 p.m. and will continue at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
