University Of Houston junior quarterback Case Keenum is one of the ten finalists on Sports Illustrated's midway Heisman Trophy Award. Keenum stands in seventh place at the midseason award watch and is poised for a run at the top spot if all goes according to plan.
For the last four years, SI.com has named a Halfway Heisman Trophy winner midway through the college football season. Two of the four Halfway Heisman winners have gone on to win the real trophy in December (Troy Smith 2006 and Tim Tebow 2007).
Keenum has 2,464 yards passing on 213-of-305 passing with 19 touchdowns and three more rushing scores. The Abilene, Texas native leads all players in total offense, passing yards and points responsible for. Keenum has played up to his competition, as he has enjoyed great success against the tougher teams he has faced this year. Against the three automatic qualifying BCS conference teams (Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Mississippi State), Keenum has combined to throw for 1,235 yards on 109-of-156 attempts with eight touchdown passes. Keenum has a passer rating of 148.17 in those three games.
He has also ran for a couple more scores at key points in those games. His touchdown run against Texas Tech sealed the victory for Houston and came with only 49 seconds left on the clock. Also his touchdown scamper against Oklahoma State established an early 7-0 lead that set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Keenum currently sits at sixth place at the HeismanPundit.com, which is credited as one of the foremost authorities on Heisman voting tendencies.
