Swimming and Diving Finishes 1-2 at LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of Houston swimming and diving meet finished with a 1-2 record Saturday afternoon at the LSU Invitational, defeating the University of New Orleans (253-90) and falling to LSU (211-140) and Rice (178-169). With the finish, Houston is now 14-5 on the season.
At the dual meet, Sasha Schwendenwein took home the Cougars only swimming event win in the second day of competition with a time of 2:01.57 in the 200-yard butterfly. Also finishing in the event were Andrea Kells in seventh (2:10.24) and Danica Lubbers in 11th (2:13.78).
Schwendenwein also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.33, she was followed in sixth by Kimberley Eeson (52.91), 11th by Paige Bissett (53.80) and 16th by Anne Stone (59.99). Eeson took top honors for the Cougars in the 500-yard freestyle with a fourth place time of 5:04.09. Also competing in the event was Rachel Holcomb who turned in a ninth place time of 5:34.59.
Andrea Pa'lmai recorded a third place time in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:25.28, while three other Cougars turned top 12 times. Leading the way was Beccy Hillis in fourth (4:33.30), Natalie Newcomb in 10th (4:42.61) and Lubbers in 12th (4:46.54). Pa'lmai was also fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.91. Other Cougars turning in finishing times in the event included Jessica Shamburger (7th; 2:06.63), Bissett (9th; 2:10.63) and Rachel Johnson (15th; 2:24.37).
In the final individual swimming event of the meet, Hillis took home a fourth place finish of 1:05.48 in the 100-yard breaststroke. She was trailed in 11th by Newcomb (1:11.51) and in 14th by Borbala Juhasz (1:19.91).
In the relay events, the Houston `A' team finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.47 and the `B' team was eighth with a time of 1:58.94. The Cougar `A' team took second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:49.93.
On the diving board, Anastasia Pozdniakova continued her dominance this season, winning her eighth consecutive 3-meter event this season in eight tries. She finished with 364.80 points, while teammates Courtney Forcucci finished second (289.50) and Jessalyn Almond was third (286.05).
UP NEXT
Houston will be back in the pool on Feb. 11 against Texas in the Sprint for the Cure Meet. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
