HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team hits the road on Thursday for a clash with Conference USA preseason favorite Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. Entering the showdown, both the Cougars and Golden Eagles sit in a six-way tie atop the C-USA standings with 3-1 league records.
The Cougars (11-5) are coming off a pair of wins at Hofheinz Pavilion last weekend when they downed UAB and Memphis to run their record on their home court to a perfect 8-0. UH is just 2-4 on the road this season, however, the team earned a split during a difficult two-game road swing to kick off conference play, knocking off Tulane on Jan. 9 before dropping a hard-fought contest at defending C-USA champion UTEP two days later.
Sophomore Brittney Scott has stepped up her play since the team began league play, averaging 18 points per game during her last four contests. The guard from Orange, Texas, is also riding the high of her most prolific scoring game in a Cougar uniform, pouring in a career-best 25 points in a win over Memphis on Jan. 18.
Scott's play has been a nice complement to the steady performances the team has become accustom to getting from forward Courtney Taylor, who has developed into one of C-USA's most dynamic players in her sophomore season. Taylor leads the entire league in rebounds with 11.1 rebounds per contest, while being tied for fourth in scoring at 16.2 points per game.
Southern Miss, which was selected the league favorite in the C-USA preseason poll, enters Thursday's contest with a 10-7 record under head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. Junior forward Pauline Love, C-USA Preseason Player of the Year, is enjoying a solid season, averaging 16.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.
