HOUSTON, Texas - With the entire 2008 roster reporting this afternoon, the University of Houston preseason football camp officially opened with an eye on tomorrow afternoon's first practice at 5 pm on the UH Practice Fields. Potential inclement weather could push the Cougar practice indoors in the comfortable confines of the Yeoman Field House.
The team met at 3 pm and sat through an orientation of compliance, housing, academics, media relations, equipment, sports medicine and strength and conditioning. After a team dinner, the squad participated in a team event of karaoke for the remainder of the evening.
UH head coach Kevin Sumlin, who is entering his first season at the helm of the Houston Program, is ready to evaluate his squad on a variety of issues.
"We like to take a look at the guys from over the summer, and see how they have improved strength wise and conditioning wise," Sumlin said. "Then, we like to look at the new guys (where) there is always going to be some surprises. There is always the guys you think are going to be pretty good, and then there are a couple guys that you weren't counting on that will pop out.
"We're just anxious to get on the field and see who is who."
With the Cougars wrapping up their academic responsibilities with morning classes, Houston will practice in the afternoon for the next week and a half. Sumlin and his staff want to stress the basics with this in mind.
"We're just going to get back to the basics," Sumlin added, "and make sure, number one, that guys understand the basis of the schemes. And, number two, just get them acclimated to what we are trying to accomplish and get them used to the practice routine."
As a reminder, the Cougars' practices are closed to the general public.
