Volleyball Opens 2008 Season This Weekend

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team kicks off the 2008 season Friday at the Marquette Kickoff Classic in Milwaukee, Wisc. The tournament will feature Marquette, Tennessee, UT-Chattanooga and Houston.
Houston returns eight letterwinners to a young squad that welcomes seven newcomers. The Cougars will be led by seniors Justine Farmer, Kelsey King and Barbara Freitas. Farmer was a 2007 First Team All-Conference USA selection and was recently named to the 2008 All-Conference Preseason Team.
UH opens play at the tournament against host Marquette at 7 p.m. on Friday. It will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2004 and the 12th time overall. The Cougars hold a 9-2 lead in the series despite losing in four games during their last meeting with the Golden Eagles.
The tournament will conclude on Saturday with two matches for the Cougars. Houston plays a 10:30 a.m. contest against Tennessee and closes out the weekend with a 4:30 p.m. match against UT-Chattanooga.
The Cougars are 5-2 all-time against the Volunteers, losing the last match-up 2-3 in 2000. It will be the first meeting between UH and UT-Chattanooga.

Following the Marquette Kickoff Tournament, Houston will continue to play on the road at the NMSU Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M., on Sept. 5-6 and the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 11-12. The will then play host to Lamar on Sept. 17 for the 2008 home opener.
