HOSUTON - Under partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures, the University of Houston football team held an energetic workout Tuesday afternoon as it continues to prepare for its season opener.
The Cougars worked out in full pads for just more than two hours on the UH practice fields. Following the workout, first-year head coach Kevin Sumlin said he was pleased with his team's performance, especially at the end of practice.
"We got better today. We are working on a few things," Sumlin said. "The team period was a lot more spirited, a lot more physical, and we are better."
UH opens its 2008 season at 6 p.m., Aug. 30, when it plays host to Southern in the Cougar Football Classic on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. It will be the first meeting between these two teams on the gridiron.
Fans can hear the game live on 790 AM The Sports Animal with Tom Franklin calling the play-by-play action, David Klingler and Ted Pardee providing color analysis and Chuck Brown reporting from the sidelines. The pregame show is slated to begin one hour before kickoff.
Fans also can follow live stats over the Internet by clicking the Gametracker link at UHCougars.com.
As the 2008 training camp draws to a close, Sumlin said that he and his coaching staff were preparing to increase the number of plays for the players on their first- and second-team units.
"We are working to get better and increase the reps for our first and second groups, maybe not be out here as long," Sumlin said. "We want to get the first and second groups more reps instead of repping 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s. That's the main focus right now."
With 11 days before the season opener, the Cougars continued to work on their own offensive and defensive schemes and won't begin installing the game plan for Southern until later in the week.
The Cougars continue training camp Wednesday with some additional duties for Sumlin. He, along with UH director of athletics Dave Maggard will join Southern athletics director Greg LeFleur at a press conference Wednesday.
The press conference begins at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Grooves Restaurant and Lounge, located at 2300 Pierce. Alumni and fans of both schools are invited to attend the press conference.
