HOUSTON, Texas - Just two days away from its second full squad scrimmage of the preseason, the University of Houston today wrapped another two-a-day slate of practices, working out in the morning and returning in full pads for a two-hour practice in the afternoon.
UH head coach Kevin Sumlin is pleased with the way his team is starting to take shape.
"We've put in our base schemes, (and) we are tweaking those," Sumlin said, "and we are getting into another level of blitzes, as well as adjustments and plays. So, now we have a couple of practices to get everything right, and then go out on Saturday and see if those guys can execute what we are trying to get done.
"And, we need to be sound, fundamentally. It is a chance for those guys to get out and play without us on the field."
Now that the final summer school session is in the books, the UH squad has around 10 days of no academics leading up to the first day of school on Monday, August 25. Sumlin feels this is a good time to bring positional battles to a close.
"I think after the scrimmage on Saturday, we will start settling in on where we are with our two-deep," Sumlin added, "and then we'll begin working on our opponents."
With a busy schedule of events taking part on the UH campus, Sumlin and his staff have moved Saturday's scrimmage to around 10:10 am on the infield of the Carl Lewis International Track and Field Complex behind the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Cougars will hit the field at 9:45 am for stretching in a prelude to the scrimmage.
Houston will have an afternoon workout tomorrow prior to the second scrimmage on Saturday morning.
