Swimming and Diving Sweeps Weekly C-USA Awards

IRVING, Texas - The University of Houston swimming and diving team swept the weekly Conference USA awards for the fourth time this season as senior Sasha Schwendenwein was named the Swimmer of the Week and junior Anastasia Pozdniakova was named the Diver of the Week.
Schwendenwein took home her third Swimmer of the Week award this season and the fifth of her career as she helped the Cougars to a sixth-place finish at the Texas Invitational. She finished sixth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.5 for the third fastest time in school history and she also turned in a 1:49.47 finish in the 200-yard freestyle for the fifth fastest time in school history.
In addition to breaking into the Cougar record books, the Randburg, South Africa native also set season-highs in the 100-yard butterfly (55.10), 100-yard backstroke (59.89) and the 50-yard freestyle (24:07). Her finish in the 100-yard butterfly was also the fourth fastest time in school history. Schwendenwein was also a member of each of the relay teams that finished in the top 15 at the meet.
Pozdniakova won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events at the Texas Invitational on her way to the fifth Diver of the Week award this season and the ninth of her career. She also moved into second place on the all-time Diver of the Week with her nine wins, behind former Cougar Yulia Pakhalina who took home the award 10 times from 2001-03.
The Elektrosal, Russia native has now won both diving events at all six meets that the Cougars have participated in this season. She finished with 380.85 points in the 3-meter event and 333.0 points in the 1-meter event.
The Cougars will next be in the pool on Jan. 3 when they participate in the Puerto Rico Invitational in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the team's winter training.
