Swimming and Diving Sprints for the Cure

HOUSTON - On Saturday, Oct. 4, 24 members of the University of Houston swimming and diving team ran at the Houston Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Sam Houston Race Park.
The team ran the 5K race in honor of volunteer assistant coach Jarrod Marrs' mother. The Cougars will also play host to the Sprint for the Cure dual against Texas on Feb. 11 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
This was the 18th anniversary of the event that had over 30,000 participants, a Houston race record. On race day, 1.8 million dollars had been raised for the Komen foundation.
Marrs led the Cougars with a 44th place overall finish and a sixth place finish in the men's age 30-34 division. Assistant coach Jaime Lewis finished 25th in the women's age 25-29 division.
Among the team, UH had three athletes finish in the Top 15 of their division. Sophomore Amber Brodeur finished 10th and freshman Beccy Hillis finished 11th in the women's age 15-19 division, while senior Sasha Schwendenwein finished 14th in the women's age 20-24 division.
The Cougars will be back in the pool Friday in a dual against Southwestern before returning to Houston for a Saturday dual against North Texas. The first event of the North Texas dual is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
