Swimming and Diving Nearly Upsets Michigan State, 126-117

EAST LANSING, Mich. --The University of Houston swimming and diving team nearly upset Michigan State Friday afternoon at McCaffree Pool in East Lansing, Mich. The Cougars only lost by nine points with a final score of 126-117.
Senior co-captain Sasha Schwendenwein and freshman Beccy Hillis led the Cougars, setting McCaffree Pool records and breaking into the Cougars Top 10 record books.
Schwendenwein finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.23, the second fastest time in school history, which also beat the previous pool record of 1:50.79.
She also beat the pool record (2:01.40) in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.70, on her way to the fifth fastest time in school history.
Hillis broke into the record books with her performance during the 200-yard breastroke with a time of 2:18.96, the sixth fastest time in school history. She beat the previous pool record of 2:18.96.
Hillis also finished second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09. 28, while Andrea Pa'lmai took third with a time of 2:09.63. Freshman Rachel Johnson finished sixth with a time of 2:23.86.
Junior Anastasia Pozdniakova took first in the 3-meter diving with a score of 382.10. Sophomore Lacey Truelove finished second with a score of 293.18, while sophomore Courtney Forcucci finished fourth (286.20). Freshman Jessalyn Almond also finished sixth with a score of 273.15.
Pozdniakova won the 1-meter diving event (325.88), with Truelove in second with a score of 280.72. Forcucci scored 265.20 points to take third and Almond finished eighth with her score of 234.14.
In the 400-yard medley, the team of senior Doreen Polotzek, junior Jessica Shamburger, sophomore Paige Bissett and Hillis finished third with a time of 3:57.42, less than a second behind second place (3.57. 07).
Freshman Kimberley Eeson took second-place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with her time of 10:23.00. Freshman Natalie Newcomb finished fourth (10:44.69), while freshman Rachel Holcomb finished sixth (11:33.71).
Behind Schwendenwein in the 200-yard freestyle was freshman Olga Bordatcheva, who finished third with a time of 1:56.87. Freshman Anne Stone finished sixth in the event with a time of 2:11.82.
Sophomore Brittany Copeland finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (55.15), with Shamburger (55.28), and Bissett (55.35) right behind her in fifth and sixth.
Pa'lmai won the 200-yard backstroke event with a time of 2:05.38. Sophomore Markee Johnson finished in fifth with a time of 2:22.46.
Eeson took the first-place victory in the 500-yard freestyle with her time of 5:01.86. Newcomb finished fourth with a time of 5:16.06.
The team of Schwendenwein, Pa'lmai, Eeson, and Bordatcheva, won the final event of the afternoon. The team finished the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:34.89. Johnson, Holcomb, Stone and Johnson took fourth-place in the event a time of 8:41.78.
Next Up
The Cougars travel to Rochester, Mich. Saturday, to compete in a dual against Oakland. The Cougars are 0-1 all-time against Oakland, after their 73-22 loss in 2000.
Following the weekend on the road, Houston will return home for a meet against Rice and New Mexico State on Nov. 6. The Cougars will then host the Phill Hansel Dual Meet Weekend featuring Rice, Incarnate Word, Florida International and Vanderbilt on Nov. 14-15.
