HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming team will travel to Keller, Texas Friday for the Second Annual North Texas Relays in the Cougars first meet of the season.
The Cougars hosted the Red & White Meet Wednesday to prep for the season opener. The White Team defeated the Red Team, 168-103, in the annual intrasquad scrimmage at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Houston will swim against North Texas, TCU, SMU and Missouri State at the North Texas Relays. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 pm and there will be no diving events this weekend.
"This weekend is about us getting going and competing," head coach Mark Taylor said. "The other four teams that we're going to be racing did not have any distractions like hurricanes to deal with so we are a couple of weeks behind them in preparation but I'm not worried about it all."
The Cougars will get a glimpse of Conference USA opponent SMU at the meet. The Mustangs are the reigning Conference USA Swimming and Diving Champions.
"We are racing one of the top teams in the country, SMU who has been our conference champion since they've been in our conference," Taylor said.
North Texas swam against the Cougars last season and TCU is another Texas opponent the Cougars will face. When Houston swims against Missouri State, it will be the first time a Taylor-led squad will swim against the Bears.
"We also have a very strong TCU team from the Mountain West and the North Texas team is always very well prepared by their coach," Taylor said.
This will be the first time that one of my teams have swam against Missouri State so we are not really quite sure as what we are going to face in that regards, but we are looking to go out there and try people in some brand new events."
Following the North Texas Relays, Houston will swim a dual against Southwestern on Oct. 10 before returning home to swim against North Texas in a dual on Oct. 11.
A complete recap of the North Texas Relays will be available at www.UHCougars.com following the meet.
