HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team continued preparations for its upcoming game against SMU at 7 p.m., Saturday, hitting the UH practice fields for about two hours on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars worked out in shorts and pads under cloudy and muggy weather brought in by some rain showers earlier in the day.
Houston (3-3, 2-0 C-USA) heads to Dallas this weekend following the team's 45-20 comeback win over UAB last Thursday. Head coach Kevin Sumlin was happy to get back into a routine practice week following the midweek game.
"I think it's been really great for us to get back to a normal routine," Sumlin said. "The players have shown great energy and focus, and we really can't wait to get back onto the field."
SMU enters the game following a 37-31 loss against Conference USA-rival Tulsa last weekend. But, Sumlin has noticed vast improvement in the Mustangs this season since the arrival of head coach June Jones.
"We're playing a team that if you look at the tape has improved every week," Sumlin said. "I knew that they (SMU) were going to get better but I was hoping it was going to be a couple weeks later than this week.
"What you are seeing is a team that has improved dramatically. I have always had a lot of respect for June Jones. They were ahead against Tulsa at halftime (last week) and had a chance to win at the end of the game."
The game will be broadcast on 790 The Sports Animal beginning one hour prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, with Tom Franklin handling the play-by-play duties, Ted Pardee as the color analyst and Chuck Brown working the sidelines.
