Irving, Texas - University of Houston swimmer Sasha Schwendenwein and diver Anastasia Pozdniakova were named the Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week as it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The duo guided the Cougars to a 2-0 record last week in duals against Southwestern and North Texas.
Senior co-captain Schwendenwein won each of her eight events last weekend for the third Swimmer of the Week award in her career. She started the weekend, winning the 400-yard medley relay against Southwestern with a time of 4:13.03. She also took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle (25.45), 200-yard backstroke (2:11.45) and the 200-yard IM (2:10.90).
Against North Texas, Schwendenwein won the 200-yard butterfly with a final time of 2:05.43 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.92. She capped the meet with wins in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.30) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.14).
After taking a redshirt season in 2007-08 to prepare for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Pozdniakova returned to win both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events against North Texas. Her 307.43 points in the 1-meter competition and her 281.70 points in the 3-meter competition automatically qualified her for the NCAA Zone Diving meet.
Against the Mean Green, she was the only diver to surpass 300 points in the 1-meter diving event. She also helped the Cougars sweep the top three finishes in each event.
Pozdniakova was named the C-USA Diver of the Meet after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the 2007 C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships.
This is the fifth weekly honor of the junior's career. She returns to the Cougars this season after winning a silver medal at the Olympics in the 3-meter synchronized diving with former Cougar Yulia Pakhalina for their native Russia.
