IRVING - Laurie Wagner won Conference USA Hitter of the Week honors Monday afternoon as announced by the league's office. It's the first career weekly award for Wagner.
The Houston native hit .750 with a home run, five RBIs and a 1.750 slugging percentage as Cougars took two of three games against Marshall last weekend. With the series win, Houston became the first team since DePaul in 2003 to win all of its league series during the regular season. The Cougars also became C-USA's first 20-win team in conference play since Louisville in 2005.
Four of Wagner's eight at-bats against the Thundering Herd produced a RBI, including all three of her trips to the plate in the middle game of the series. She drove home the go-ahead run in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to give Houston a 2-1 lead.
In her next at-bat in the fourth inning, Wagner pushed Houston's lead to 6-1 with a two-run homer. She knocked home her career-best fourth run on a RBI-double during her final plate appearance in the sixth inning.
In the series finale, Wagner dropped a crucial sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning to move runners into scoring position that allowed the next batter, Amanda Grote, to tie the game with an RBI-single. Wagner completed her weekend by drawing a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning.
Houston returns to the diamond as the No. 1 seed in the Conference USA Championship presented by Coca-Cola on the UCF campus. The Cougars face the winner of the UCF-Marshall game 5:30pm CST Thursday. A live audio webcast in addition to live stats via GameTracker will be available on UHCougars.com for all tournament games.
