HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team held a successful two hour scrimmage Tuesday afternoon under cloudy and humid conditions at the UH Athletics Complex.
The scrimmage was originally supposed to be held last Saturday at Robertson Stadium but inclement weather forced the Cougars indoors for a regular practice.
"It was good for us to get back outside and back to work," head coach Art Briles said. "It gets a little predictable for both sides of the ball when you go against yourself so much during the spring. We have to continue to keep grinding and working on personal improvement. The players also have to make plays when they present themselves."
The defense put together a solid scrimmage that was filled with quarterback pressures and strong tackling.
"The defense is moving around and playing with a lot of confidence," Briles said. "They've done a great job of making plays and transitioning into the 4-2-5 scheme."
The offense also pieced together a couple of excellent drives. Jeron Harvey capped one drive by tossing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Mark Hafner on an end around. Freshman running back Randall Antoine also broke a pair of 30-yard runs and caught passes out of the backfield.
"Randall has had an excellent spring using his quick feet to run the football and make some big plays," Briles said. "The other thing I like about him is that he's a momentum player that plays with a lot of passion. His teammates really respond to him. He can give the backfield a spark with Anthony Alridge."
The defending C-USA champions will have Wednesday off before returning to the practice field on Thursday and Friday for final preparations for the annual Red and White game.
Fans are welcomed to attend the Red and White game Saturday at 10am at the Carl Lewis International Track and Field Complex on the UH campus.
"We'll go real hard Thursday before backing off a little Friday," Briles said. "We need a good crowd and atmosphere for Saturday. Our guys are ready and excited to compete in a game atmosphere."
