AKRON, Ohio - The University of Houston women's basketball team dropped a 81-76 decision to Akron in non-conference action Sunday at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
Houston (4-7) led by nine with just over 10 minutes left and had its two-game winning streak snapped. The Cougars had three chances to tie it up in the final 30 seconds, but all three attempts hit the rim.
Akron (5-5) knocked down 11 three points and was 24-32 from the free throw line, including a 10-for-15 effort in the final five minutes.
Cobilyn Hill (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) finished with a game-high 23 points along with 13 rebounds. She set career highs in both categories and earned her first-career double-double.
The Zips ran off a 24-7 run that spanned just over seven minutes to lead 70-63 with 3:58 to go. A 9-1 Houston run gave the Cougars a 72-71 lead with 2:25 left. Akron moved back to a six-point advantage with just under a minute left and the Cougars made a late rally to get within two, but would get no closer.
Courtney Taylor (Crockett, Texas/Crockett HS) missed the game due to a back injury.
Forty two of UH's 76 points came in the paint and the Cougars converted 20 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points.
Twiggy McIntyre (Sapulpa, Okla./Sapulpa HS/Kansas State) finished with 18 points and Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) finished with 13.
The Cougars led 33-29 at halftime following a slow start that saw UH miss its two shot attempts while turning it over five times in the first five minutes. The Cougars turned it over 11 times in the half.
The game was a see-saw battle through the half with five ties and four lead changes. Houston led by four, trailed by as many as six and moved back to a four-point lead before heading into the locker room.
Houston starts a season-long six-game homestand on Dec. 21 against longtime rival TCU. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion.
UH's second game of the homestand, a Dec. 28 matchup against Duke has been moved up to a 1 p.m. start due the Cougar Football team's participation in the Texas Bowl that evening at Reliant Stadium.
