HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team continues Conference USA play this weekend on the road, taking on East Carolina and Marshall on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
The Cougars (4-7-1, 0-3 C-USA) take on the Pirates at 3 p.m. CDT Friday before heading to Huntington, W.Va., to matchup with the Thundering Herd at noon Sunday.
Houston, starting six freshmen, are working through the growing pains of a young team after dropping a pair of home matches last weekend to Memphis and UAB.
Head coach Susan Bush has been doing some tinkering with the lineup, trying to find a consistent scoring combination for her squad. Last weekend, Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) moved back on defense while Stephanie Booker (Round Rock, Texas/Stony Point HS) took her place at forward. The move yielded some solid results as Booker produced a number of good chances using her speed to good advantage in the attaching third.
Goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS), who has quietly put together a very solid campaign, is on the verge of becoming UH's all-time leader in saves.
The junior netminder needs four stops to tie Michelle Denomme's all-time saves record of 188. Scott has made 81 saves through 12 games and has a goals against average of 1.94.
East Carolina is 7-2-3 (1-1-1 C-USA) on the season. Their last time out, the Pirates tied Marshall 0-0 in double overtime. Blair Heffner is the team's leading scorer with four goals while Amy Szilard has tallied three scores. Amber Campbell has started all 12 games for ECU, compiling a goals against average of 0.38 with 59 saves and eight shutouts.
Marshall is 3-8-1 (0-2-1 C-USA) and had lost four-straight games before the double overtime tie wtih ECU last weekend. Kassie Hollman and Molly Snead are tied for the team scoring lead with two goals apiece. Liz Orton has seen the lion's share of time in goal this season with a 1.49 goals against average and 68 saves. The Herd takes on Rice Friday evening prior to facing UH on Sunday.
