HOUSTON - Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) finished with 24 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the University of Houston past a struggling Tulsa squad, 70-54, Thursday in Conference USA action on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Jackson, an All-America candidate, netted her third double-double in 11 games and the sixth of her career. She lead a Houston attack that recovered nicely from a dreadful 30 percent shooting performance just four days ago at Rice. Tonight, UH was 27-58 from the field (.466), its second best shooting night of the season. The Cougars were a season-best 45.5 percent from behind the arc (5-11) and tied a season-best with 17 points.
Houston (6-11, 3-4 C-USA) has won five-straight at home while Tulsa (7-12, 2-5 C-USA) has dropped three of its past four games. The Golden Hurricane never got warmed up, shooting 30.5 percent (18-59) on the night. They were 2-15 (.133) from the three-point line and committed 22 turnovers, which were converted into 22 points by the Cougars.
The Cougars, playing with just seven student-athletes on their active roster, pushed their 17-point halftime lead to 27 ten minutes into the second half, leading 54-27 with 9:57 left. UH's led buzzer-to-buzzer and the lead was never below 16 in the second half.
Sunshine Misa-Uli (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Farrington HS/Barton County CC) finished with 14 points, most coming inside the paint. UH held a 34-24 advantage on points inside and also won the rebounding battle 42-39. Whitney James (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial HS/North Oklahoma College) tied a career high with 12 rebounds.
Tulsa's Jillian Robbins (Spring, Texas) led all players with 25 points and 15 rebounds, her 14th double-double of the season. Teka Brooks also found double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Houston led 35-18 at the break behind 12 points from Jackson and a near-50-percent shooting effort (14-30/.467). Tulsa shot just 19 percent (5-26) and its 18 points was the lowest total for a UH opponent in a half this season. UH took the ball inside, scoring 16 of its points in the paint and tallying 16 points off 15 Golden Hurricane turnovers.
The Cougars took a 14-point lead, 23-9, with 8:52 left in the half, pushing it to 19, 35-16, with 1:07 left. Tulsa made just three field goals in the final 13 minutes of the half.
The Cougars continue a four-game homestand on Sunday, facing off with SMU at 2 p.m. CST in Hofheinz Pavilion.
