HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming and Diving team c loses out its 2007 regular-season schedule this weekend against three Louisiana teams in Baton Rouge, La.
The busy weekend starts at 6 p.m., Friday, as the Cougars square off against host LSU, Conference USA rival Rice and New Orleans in a two-day, quad meet at the LSU Natatorium. Fans should note that Friday's start time is two hours later than what was originally released on Cougar schedules.
The second half of that quad meet begins at 11 a.m., Saturday.
On Sunday, the Cougars square off against New Orleans again in relay meet at the UNO Lakefront Aquatic Center.
The Cougars come into the meet after taking a 137-106 win over Miami (Fla.) last weekend during the regular-season home finale at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. With that win, the Cougars improved to 16-4 overall, nearly doubling the previous record of nine wins in a single season set by the 2003-04 and 2005-06 teams.
Senior swimming captain Szintia Szanto and sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova led the way for the Cougars in a pair of dual meets last weekend. The UH duo was rewarded for their impressive efforts by sweeping the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors earlier this week.
Szanto won the Cougars' only individual swimming event against No. 5 Texas A&M and won three events on Senior Day against the Hurricanes. Pozdniakova, the reigning C-USA Freshman Diver of the Year and a five-time C-USA Diver of the Week recipient in 2006-07, won all four diving events in which she competed last weekend.
Sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein has been a steady contributor for the Cougars in the freestyle events, posting UH season-best times in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard events.
Fellow sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai has posted season-best times in four events, including the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley.
While this will end the 2006-07 regular season, fans will still have one last chance to watch the Cougars in action at home. For the fourth consecutive season, UH will play host to the 2007 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational on Feb. 14-17 at the CRWC Natatorium.
