Swimming & Diving Sweeps C-USA Weekly Awards

HOUSTON - University of Houston senior Szintia Szanto and sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova swept the Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Both student-athletes helped lead the Cougars to strong showing in a pair of dual meets last weekend against No. 5 Texas A&M and Miami (Fla.) at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
Competing in her final regular-season home meet, Szanto earned the Cougars' only event win against the Aggies and followed that with three event wins against Miami (Fla.).
The Budapest, Hungary, native won the 100-yard butterfly against Texas A&M with a time of 57.07. She followed that the next day with wins in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.83), 200-yard butterfly (2:05.10) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.40) against the Hurricanes. Her time in the last event was the fourth-fastest time in UH history.
It was Szanto second's weekly honor in 2006-07 and the fifth award in her career.
Pozdniakova won all four diving events in which she competed against No. 5 Texas A&M and Miami (Fla.) last weekend. She won the 3-meter springboard with 358.13 points and added 301.87 points to capture first place on the 1-meter board against the Aggies. She was the only diver to crack 300 points in either event.
Against the Hurricanes, Pozdniakova tallied 350.58 points on the 3-meter board and 299.32 points on the 1-meter board.
It was her fifth Diver of the Week honor this season.
The Cougars wrap up their regular season this weekend in Louisiana. The Cougars face LSU, C-USA rival Rice and New Orleans in a two-day, quad-meet in Baton Rouge, La., beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and wrapping up at 11a.m., Saturday.
From there, the team faces New Orleans at 11 a.m., Sunday in New Orleans.
