HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team received eye exams in preparation for the upcoming season Friday afternoon at the College of Optometry on the UH campus.
Each player underwent a basic eye exam as a foundation for vision. Data was gathered and will be analyzed by the College of Optometry staff to be incorporated into vision training program for each player. The program will be customized to each player's results to optimize things like hand-eye coordination.
"The standard of visual function for an athlete is higher than a normal person," clinical physician Kevin Gee said. "The purpose of this afternoon was to build upon a foundation. If there are any inadequacies, we can put the player in a program that will fix the inadequacy through a program."
The Cougar softball program is the first team to use the College of Optometry.
"We're excited to be on board with the College of Optometry," head coach Kyla Holas said. "This is something that will help us fine tune and get ready for the season along with the fundamentals that we work on in practice."
"This is a great opportunity to show that across the university we're a big team," Gee said. "Coach Holas should be commended for starting this program. It's something that we hope will be done on a yearly basis to show improvement as time passes."
