HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team wraps up its 2007 regular-season home schedule this weekend with a pair of dual meets at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
The Cougars play host to No. 5 Texas A&M at 4 p.m., Friday before facing Miami (Fla.) at 11:30 a.m., Saturday. Fans should note that the starting time for Saturday's meet against the Hurricanes was pushed back earlier in the week.
Senior swimmers Szintia Szanto and Alejandra Salazar and senior diver Rachel Gitelson will be honored during pre-meet activities Saturday as part of Senior Day. All Cougar Swimming and Diving regular-season home events are free and open to the public, which is invited to attend.
The Cougars (15-3) come into the weekend as winners of their last six meets. In its most recent action, the Cougars collected three dual-meet wins over Florida International, New Mexico State and North Texas last weekend during a two-day quad meet.
The six-meet winning streak is the longest for UH since the beginning of the 1984 season, while the 15 dual-meet wins has nearly doubled the previous UH single-season record in that category.
Sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein leads the way for the Cougars after winning eight events - individual and as a member of a relay - team during that quad meet last weekend. With those impressive performances, the Randburg, South Africa, native was recently honored as the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, her first career weekly conference accolade.
Szanto has posted UH season-best times in four events, including the 200-yard butterfly, 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. Sophomore Andrea Pa'lmai has been equally impressive in 2006-07 with UH season-best times in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley.
Sophomore Anastasia Pozdniakova, the reigning C-USA Freshman Diver of the Year, tops the Cougars in the diving events with season-best marks in both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events. The Elektrostal, Russia, native set a CRWC Natatorium record last weekend with 382.00 points on the 3-meter board.
