NACOGDOCHES - Despite a 23-kill and a career-best 38-dig performance from Justine Farmer, the University of Houston volleyball team dropped its third consecutive 3-2 decision (32-34, 30-28, 25-30, 30-23, 11-15) Saturday afternoon to start day two of the Austin Bank SFA Invitational at Johnson Coliseum.
Farmer got off to a slow start but rebounded to rip 23 kills on a .227 attack percentage. The 38 digs in a match was the third-most in Cougar history, only behind a 42 and 39 outings from Jaci Gonzalez (2002-05). The El Paso native also surpassed the 500-dig mark after going past the 500-kill mark last weekend at the Clarion Invitational. Krystal Schulle notched a career-high 17 digs in the back row.
Kelsey King equaled her career-best, dishing out 60 assists to go along with 12 digs. King has provided a double-double in five of her last seven matches.
Becca Sartori and Kelly McAnelly knocked 18 kills apiece. McAnelly stretched out for another double-double, corralling a career-high 23 digs, while Sartori picked up five blocks. Millicent Martin chipped in 10 kills at a .391 attack clip.
Traci Rohde headlined SFA with 22 kills and 10 blocks, while J.J. Jones passed out 60 assists in addition to adding 16 digs. Stephanie Figgers, the reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Week, notched 41 digs.
The Cougars (5-5) went to a deciding fifth game for the third consecutive match and scored four of the first six points in the game. SFA (6-3) charged back at knotted the score at 6-6. After trading sideouts, the Lady Jacks took control at 9-9, scoring six of the last eight points for the 15-11 victory.
Houston turned an early 10-3 deficit into a 20-15 lead in game four behind six kills from Farmer. The Cougar defensive held SFA to a match-low .120 attack percentage en route to a 30-23 win.
SFA controlled most of the opening game and held a 29-25 advantage before the Cougars reeled off four consecutive points to even the score at 29-29. The Lady Jacks regrouped and forced a Farmer attack error to claim game one, 34-32.
Houston jumped out to an 11-8 lead in game two behind a balanced attack as King set five different players for kills. SFA got within 19-18 but a pair of Sartori kills, along with a McAnelly spike, gave Houston a healthy 22-18 margin. The Cougars held on and evened the match with a 30-28 game two win.
The Lady Jacks took the momentum out of the locker room and regained a 2-1 advantage with a 30-25 third game victory.

This is the second consecutive season that Houston and SFA have met on the volleyball court ... The Cougars still lead the all-time series, 15-3 ...
