IRVING - Ashley Calhoun was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week Monday afternoon as announced by the league office. This was Calhoun's first career weekly award.
"I'm pleased with how a couple of our new players are starting to come on," head coach Bill Walton said after Saturday's match with Baylor. "Ashley has really stepped up to the challenge of playing libero and is serving great, while Sunshine (Misa-Uli) and Kinsey (Cave) are starting to find their swings."
Calhoun anchored the Houston defense to a 3-1 weekend and a second-place finish at the Clarion Invitational last weekend. She reeled in 64 digs at a 4.57 per game average, despite only playing three matches at libero.
The freshman went over the 20-dig mark in a pair of four-game victories over Arkansas-Little Rock and New Mexico and has corralled double-digit digs in five of seven matches this season. She took off the libero jersey and notched 11 kills on a .320 attack percentage against Louisiana-Monroe.
Calhoun also has made her presence felt with her strong serve. She recorded 10 aces for the weekend, including four in a three-game match against ULM. The Wisconsin native has served an ace in six of her first seven collegiate matches.
The Cougars head to Nacogdoches for the Austin Bank SFA Invitational next weekend. The Cougars face Tennessee State, Arkansas State, Stephen F. Austin and Baylor. Houston takes on Tennessee State at 10am Friday before finishing day one against Arkansas State at 5pm.
