HouSTON, Texas - The annual right of spring practice begins Tuesday, March 7, at 3:25 pm., when the University of Houston football team returns to workouts trying to build upon the success of two bowl trips in the last three seasons.
UH head coach Art Briles welcomes back 17 starters from last season's Fort Worth Bowl squad, including 10 starters from the defensive side of the ball. Overall, over 40 lettermen will take part in spring drills, which run through the month of March and culminate in the annual Red-White Game on Saturday, April 8, at 11 am at the Carl Lewis International Track and Field Complex.
"We're always excited to get the team back on the field," commented the fourth-year head coach. "We've made some changes during the off-season that we feel are going to make this a better football team. Plus, our kids have really worked hard in the weight room since we came back for the spring semester."
During the off-season the Cougars promoted Alan Weddell to defensive coordinator and Rafe Mata to assistant coach in charge of tight ends and wide receivers. UH also hired three new assistant coaches: Tony Fitzpatrick (defensive line and special teams), Charlie Rizzo (outside linebackers) and Chris Thurmond (cornerbacks). Jason Phillips moved back to offense to coach the Cougar wide receivers.
