HOUSTON, Texas - Just 24 hours after being a unanimous selection to the Conference USA First Team, University of Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb added to his prolific career by being named the 2006 Media Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year.
"I'm excited," Kolb said. "When you work four years to get something, and you're in position to get both your personal accomplishments and the team's accomplishments, it means a lot to me.
"I got my personal (goal). The team's (goal) is coming up, and we have a big game on Friday."
Kolb has completed 68.2 percent (247-of-362) of his passes for 3,165 yards and 25 touchdowns with just three interceptions. His yardage total is second in Conference USA and his TD total ranks third, while his interception is the second-lowest of any Division I-A player. Kolb has started all 48 games of his collegiate career, more than any I-A quarterback and is C-USA's all-time leader in total offense with 13,109 yards. He owns UH career records for completions (919), attempts (1,495) and yards (12,320), while placing second in touchdown passes (90).
A unanimous selection to the First Team, Kolb is a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was the preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year. With his guidance, Houston has posted its highest win total (9) since 1990, as the Cougars get set to make back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time since making four in a row from 1978-81.
Kolb becomes just the second Cougar to receive C-USA Offensive Player of the Year honors, joining running back Antowain Smith (1996) in this category. Linebacker Wayne Rogers shared the defensive postseason honor in 2000.
Kolb becomes the first player in Conference USA history to win both the C-USA Freshman of the Year award (2003) and then a offensive, defensive or special teams honor.
Marshall defensive end Albert McClellan picked up the Defensive Player of the Year hardware, while UTEP's Johnnie Lee Higgins was named the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year for his return exploits.
SMU quarterback Justin Willis was named the C-USA Freshman of the Year.
