FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Houston women's basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting performance as it dropped its third-straight game, a 57-46 decision to TCU, Wednesday at Daniel Meyer Coliseum.
Houston (0-3) was just 16-for-59 from the field in the game (27.1 percent). TCU (1-3) didn't light the building up either, shooting 20-for-60 (33.3 percent), but the Lady Frogs took advantage of 14 fast-break points, combating UH's full-court press. Houston has lost three-straight games to start the season for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
Houston dominated the rebounding battle, pulling down 52 boards to TCU's 39. Ryan Meyers (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS/Grayson County CC) grabbed 11 boards, her second double-digit rebounding performance of the season.
Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) poured in a season-high 18 points, leading all players on the evening. Alona Obaze (Dallas, Texas/Bryan Adams HS/Trinity Valley CC) also found double figures, finishing with a career-best 14 points.
The Cougars trailed by 10, 26-16, with just over 18 minutes left in the game. A 21-9 Houston run over the next seven minutes gave UH its first lead of the season, 37-36, with 10:13 left in the game. The lead was short lived as TCU was back on top for good, 38-37, with 9:39 left. TCU pressed the advantage and used a 15-2 run to lead by 12, 51-39, with 5:45 left. The Cougars tallied just four field goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.
The Cougars trailed 22-16 at the break, making just five field goals in the opening 20 minutes. UH's 14.7 field goal percentage (5-for-34) was its worst performance in a half this season.
UH missed its first four shots and by four in the first three minutes. UH tied it up on two occasions, but could never take the lead in the half. The Cougars had an extended scoring drought of nearly seven minutes that spanned the end of the first half and the beginning of the second.
UH returns home for a Sunday matchup with No. 16 Michigan State at 2 p.m. CST on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion. Free internet audio of all Houston games is accessible at www.UHCougars.com.
