LAWRENCE, kan. - The University of Houston golf team returns to action Monday when it begins first- and second-round play at the Kansas Invitational on the 6,950-yard, par-72 course at Alvamar Golf Club.
The 54-hole tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes beginning Tuesday morning.
This will be the second straight season that the Cougars have competed at this event. A year ago, UH finished fourth in a 13-team field after posting a team score of 884. Individually, Pablo Acuna finished third after shooting a 3-under-par 213, and teammate Ricky Romano finished fifth at 1-over-par 217 to lead the Cougars.
Both players return this season for their junior campaigns. Romano, a native of Murietta, Calif., led the Cougars in last week's season-opening Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic with a seventh-place finish at 218. He fired a career-low 67 in the second round to earn the eight Top 10 finish of his career.
Acuna finished second at the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic with a 221 to tie for 16th place. With his 2-under-par 70 in the second round, he joined Romano as the only Cougars to shoot under par.
The Kansas Invitational will be the second of three consecutive tournaments for the Cougars to open the 2005-06 season. UH heads north to compete at the Adams Cup of Newport on Sept 26-27.
