Volleyball Loses to South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The University of Houston volleyball team dropped a four game decision against South Carolina (23-30, 21-30, 40-38, 28-30) in its opening match of the College of Charleston Invitational on Friday night.
In the loss, libero Jaci Gonzalez become the 13th player in NCAA history to surpass the 2,000 dig mark. The San Antonio native now sits with 2,019 career digs, and is now 55 digs shy of the Conference USA record.
Three Cougars posted double-doubles led by Justine Farmer and Kariny Ritter. Farmer matched a career-high pounding 23 kills and 15 digs, while Ritter knocked 20 kills to go along with 12 digs. Jennifer Hohl dished out 49 assists and picked up 16 digs, and Becca Sartori added 18 kills of her own.
Houston (5-6) took a 16-15 lead in game one on a Gamecock attack error, but South Carolina went on a 6-1 spurt to take control of the game holding on for the 30-23 opening game victory.
USC jumped out to an early 17-9 advantage in game two, and never looked back taking a two game lead going into the intermission.
The Cougars battled back in game three which featured 16 ties and five lead changes. In fact, Houston faced five match points before Cinthia Piva emerged with a block giving the Cougars a 40-38 win.
Game four was also a back and forth affair coming down the wire. UH tied the game at 26 on a Farmer kill, but South Carolina put together three consecutive points holding off Houston closing at the match, 30-28.
Houston hooks up with host College of Charleston tomorrow afternoon. This is the first time that these two schools will face off on the volleyball court. First serve is slated for 1pm.
