CHARLESTON, S.C. - In its final match before stepping into Conference USA play, the University of Houston volleyball team lost in five games to College of Charleston (30-17, 18-30, 26-30, 30-28, 9-15) on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars were paced by Justine Farmer slapped a career-high 24 kills and collected 18 digs, while Kariny Ritter powered home 20 kills for the third consecutive match.
Jennifer Hohl dished out 53 assists and 18 digs. In the bakc row, Jaci Gonzalez continued to chip away at the Conference USA record with 31 digs. The San Antonio native is now 24 digs shy of the league record. Gonzalez was not alone in the back row as Kelli Adams pulled out a career high 23 digs in the loss.
Houston (5-7) charged out of the gates building a 17-10 advantage in the opening game. The Cougars turned on the jets scoring 13 of the final 20 points in game one claiming a 30-17 win. Farmer paced UH with 11 kills in the game.
College of Charleston regrouped, and held Farmer to only three kills in game two. The CofC attack also fired back with a .310 attack percentage evening the match at one game apiece.
Both teams refueled at halftime, and split tight game three and game four. There were 30 ties and 16 lead changes in the two games as neither team could take more than a four point lead. College of Charleston took game three 30-26, while Houston claimed the fourth game, 30-28.
The deciding fifth game changed hands four times in the early going as the Cougars tied the game at five on a Ritter kill.
College of Charleston retook the lead at 6-5 on a Hohl service error. That sparked three consecutive College of Charleston points. Houston would get back within one on a Farmer kill at 9-8, but a CofC side out along back-to-back Houston attack errors allowed College of Charleston to take the fifth game and the victory, 15-9.
Houston returns to the hardwood at the friendly confines of the Athletics/Alumni Center against Rice to open its 10th season of Conference USA action on Wednesday night. First serve against the Owls is slated for 7pm.
